EzySt Fuel Gauge - monthly roundup for September

Why are there such big differences in petrol prices in my area at moment?

This month, we've seen the fuel discount segment of the market taking their prices lower - and they are staying lower for longer. The winners are the folks who live in the areas with these big price spreads and shop around for their fuel.

With at least a 40 cent price difference in most areas over a week, buying at the cheapest servo would save you $16 compared to the most expensive (based on a 50L fill).

Highlighted fuel trends this month

  • Motorists can't help but notice the huge differences in petrol prices around town this month - sometimes 50 cents per litre between service stations just a few hundred metres apart.

  • We are used to seeing a large spread of fuel prices across our cities - for example Bondi residents in Sydney expect to pay more for fuel than Padstow residents.

  • What is new however is we are seeing this spread happen at a more localised level, across almost all metropolitan areas in Australia.

  • Our analysis revealed that on average, there was more than 40 cents per litre between the highest and lowest price for unleaded/E10 in each local area in metropolitan centres during each week of the last month.  There were very few exceptions.

How much could you save?

It certainly pays to shop around.  Apps like EzySt allow you to find the best priced fuel before you set out.  Take a look at the table below to see what you could have saved in your local area over the last month*:

*Spread is the difference between the highest and lowest price of ULP/E10 over the week in each area, averaged over the last four weeks. The "savings possible" is the amount you could save by buying an average 50L fill at the cheapest service station in the area, instead of the most expensive.

All the best
